KNOWN BUGS / ISSUES IN SOUNDSHAPER STANDARD 1.8 / PRO 2.02 Updated: Aug. 15th 2009 ** IF DISPLAYED IN BROWSER CLICK 'BACK' WHEN FINISHED ** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NEW: • Spaces in Folder names and Filenames - see 3. • Registration bug hopefully fixed - see 1. KNOWN BUGS ========== 1. Lower-case File Names ------------------------ BUG: Some legacy code (reason now forgotten) turns all filenames into lower-case. While this doesn't affect the functionality at all, it's annoying and there is no further need for it. FIX: Fixed in next release. 2. Redundant secondary Infile ----------------------------- BUG: This bug affects processes that can have an optional Infile 2(,3,...), but where a secondary Infile is NOT chosen. If such a process follows one in which a secondary Infile WAS chosen, the Infile2 list is currently not cleared and the process is given the secondary Infile(s) anyway. The issue particularly affects the TEXTURE suite. FIX: The secondary Infile list will be cleared if no Infiles 2,3,... are chosen. The fix will appear in the next release. WORKAROUND: Clear the patch (row), which should clear the temp file ~Infile2.lst. 3. Long path-names ------------------ BUG: Soundshaper currently has some problems displaying long pathnames. FIX: In the next release, portions of long paths will not be displayed, folowing the style used in many programs, e.g.: D:\Sounds\...\MyFolder\ 4. Spaces in Folder-names and Filenames --------------------------------------- BACKGROUND: The command-line environment used by CDP does not natively support folder-names or filenames with spaces in the name. The solution is to surround the file path with inverted commas (" "), and in general Soundshaper does this. BUG: There is one (at least) one path generated by Soundshaper which has not been following this convention. However, some of the problem may lie with CDP. FIX: Paths will be checked and fixed for the next release. WORKAROUND: Don't use folder-names with spaces in the name, especially for the CDP folder (e.g. use ...\CDP5\... not ...\CDP 5\... ). FILENAMES You can, however, access and process soundfiles that have a space in the name and/or in the folder name. You can also save a file with a space in the path (folder-name) and/or the filename. 5. "SAVE TO": Saving files with channel extensions -------------------------------------------------- BUG: The Save-Button mechanism is faulty when saving files with channel extensions, such as a stereo pair of .ana files, e.g. to: myfile_c1.ana and myfile_c2.ana. Currently the base-name is not being added and the program is actually saving to "_c1.ana" and "_c2.ana" ! FIX: The bug has been fixed and the fix will be included in the next release. WORKAROUND: Use SAVE-AS (File Menu or top SAVE button), or amend the filenames as saved using standard Windows naming procedures (F2 etc.) 6. "SAVE TO" File Path ---------------------- The SAVE TO dialog box is an alternative to the traditional SAVE AS (speed button at top of screen). A possible SAVE file is suggested, and the user can edit this or change the folder. BUG: Curerently, the default folder is the same as the Source. After the first process, if the user selects and saves to a different folder, that folder ought to be used by Soundshaper as the default for subsequent processes. Currently, the Source's folder remains the default. FIX: In the next release, when the SAVE-TO folder is changed, it will stay changed for that row, until changed again. 7. GraphEd Visual Editor ------------------------- BUGS There are some problems with importing a processed column of data, when it's one of a breakpoint pair, e.g. Y values. Also, single-column textfiles may not load as intended, for example frequencies generated with BankFreqs (Data menu). WORKAROUND /FIX The problems are still being investigated. 8. REGISTRATION and greyed Menus (FIXED from 2.022) -------------------------------- BUG IN versions before 2.022, a small bug in the registration procedure under VISTA (not XP) caused the menus to remain greyed out. FIX A revised version (2.022) has been compiled which should fix the problem. This is available separately from the Downloads page (SSP2.022.zip), and is also incorporated in the various packages for version 2.022. KNOWN ISSUES / CDP PROBLEMS =========================== 1. LIMITED USER ACCOUNTS ------------------------ Some issues have arisen regarding Limited User Accounts (LUAs) in Windows. It is quite understandable, especially in a multi-user environment, that users might be given a LUA. However, Soundshaper needs to be able to write its files! In particular, Administrator Rights must be active when the program is installed. In Windows XP Home, a LUA appears to forbid any writing to NTFS partitions, except \MyDocuments and \Shared Folders (in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users). FAT32 partitions are not affected. In Windows XP Pro, administrators can set write permissions for individual folders. Writing to C:\ is normally not allowed. For Vista, the situation is different again. If you are considering running Soundshaper under a LUA, you should be aware that Soundshaper must be able to write to: • its own folder and subfolders , esp. \BAT to update supplied batch files. • the User folder specified in Settings. • the Soundfiles-out folder specified in Settings, where all temporary soundfiles etc. are written. Where the User folder has not yet been specified (on initial startup), Soundshaper uses a default location of C:\ (to avoid other problems) and has been writing to C:\ on exit. This has been updated (Oct. 08), so that it will not write to the default. 2. CDP FILTER FUNCTIONS: FILTER SWEEPING and FILTER VARIABLE ------------------------------------------------------------ The CDP modes appear to be mixed up: Mode Official Actual ---- -------- ------ 1 High-pass Notch 2 Low-pass Band-pass 3 Band-pass Low-pass 4 Notch High-pass The anomaly has been corrected in Soundshaper (from 2.02): Soundshaper's modes appear as the Official list above, but trigger a reversed list of CDP modes, e.g. High-pass triggers CDP Mode 4. 5. CDP PROBLEMS: RELEASE 5.01 ----------------------------- As far as we can tell, there are still problems with: SFEDIT REPLACE: Does insert the sound, but doesn't overwrite. BANDS: Questions amplitude variation within a band. DEGRADE(modify radical 4): Hangs in ProcessStereo (hence Mono-only) RINGMOD: Halves file length if stereo infile Soundshaper uses ProcessStereo to get around this. OCTMOVE: Appears to shift one way only (up but not down?). MAKE2: Not yet implemented in Soundshaper Combine INTERLEAVE: Max. acceptable leaf size is <150: higher values give error. (Soundshaper parameter range now restricted to 150.) Acknowledgements ---------------- Grateful thanks are due to Gustav Ciamaga for extensive testing of Soundshaper Pro and continuing suggestions for improvement. Thanks also to Anthony Bonello for pointing out some recent bugs, including the CDP Filter bug.
